Anagnorisis – A poem

In the sunlit room,
Lies a body under the scrutiny of
Wide eyes that are desperate to
Make some sense of the upheaval.
With my head hung,
I stand in the farthest corner
Biting my nails down to the quick.
God, save me! God, save me today!
The metal is cold against my palm and
My face is burning with shame.
Oh, What have I done!
I force myself forward despite
The alarm blaring inside my head.
Brushing my unsteady fingers
Against firm shoulders,
I part the crowd and find before me:
A familiar face, a familiar body.
A broken mirror, a disheveled counterpart.
Something shifts beneath my feet
And slams me against the truth.
I had plunged the knife into
A heart last night without recognizing
That the very blood it spilled
Had my name on it.
