How thoughts determine our future

William James says in one of his quotes that,

Thoughts become perception, perception becomes reality. Alter your thoughts, alter your reality.

Seems good, let’s see how it really happens. Apparently, we consider thought as a signal or information which our mind gives us based on the existing material it has. But when we dive deeply into this, some questions would pop up that how were these thoughts really created? And which aspects are its ingredients? Our mind generates thoughts by using our memory or experiences we had in the past to which we had paid attention. So how are these experiences made, with present time? For instance, right now, in the present, a lot of things might be happening in the world that people are experiencing but you are reading this, an experience for you. If you’re paying attention, your mind will capture it for your further use. So, we came up to the point that all depends on the present moment in which we are living. All the thoughts you have now are based on the present experiences that have become past now. These experiences, and memories are actually the ingredients of our thought soup which the chef mind cooks for us mostly on no demand. Just kidding. Back to the topic, these thoughts are actually determining the future. Before doing most of the actions we have their thoughts in our minds. We perform actions based on those thoughts. As the thoughts are, so are the actions that will affect the future – the future of us which we made by our actions.

Great share! I was just wondering, is it possible for a thought to be constructed purely out of reasoning – in which our past experiences have no role in thinking that thought?

Well, it’s little difficult to spell out but in my thinking I have came to the point that generating thoughts out of reasoning are still under the influence of our taste, choices and mindset which build up as time passes.

If itā€™s purely based on experiences, doesnā€™t that mean that our experiences or environment will decide what we think? Then do we have any control over our thoughts?

Exactly! I think we don’t have control on our thoughts, they are just similar to the environment we live, but on actions we do have control. Thoughts could be good or bad but it’s up to us that which one we would adopt.
